How to Choose the Right Size of Hot Water Tank?

Posted on

If you're installing a new hot water system with tank storage, then you need to choose the right size of tank for your needs. You want storage that gives you enough water, but you don't want to waste energy on a tank that is too big.

While you typically make this decision based on the number of people using water in your home or the number of bathrooms you have, there are other factors to consider. What should you think about?

How Do People Use Water?

The way that you use water in your home may affect the size of storage tank that you need. While you may assume that all households of a similar size use the same amount of water, this isn't always the case.

For example, say everyone in your family takes showers rather than baths. In this case, your water consumption will be lower. Showering for 10 minutes or less uses less water than bathing.

However, if a couple of members of your family prefer a bath over a shower every day, then they might use more hot water. Typically, the more water you use, the bigger your tank needs to be.

When Do People Use Water?

Water tanks refill themselves, so periodic use of hot water across the day and night might not affect your storage capacity too much. For example, if you shower in the morning and your partner showers at night, then you're not likely to run out of water.

However, if you and your family use a lot of water at a certain time of day, then this could deplete your tank too quickly. For example, if you all take showers or baths in the morning, sometimes at the same time in different bathrooms, then a smaller water storage unit might struggle to keep up.  In this instance, going larger might be the best idea.

What Else Uses Water?

Your family members aren't the only drain on your water storage. Your appliances also play a part in this. Some appliances, as well as the times you use them, could affect your choice of storage capacity.

For example, if you run a washing machine, dishwasher and spa bath regularly, then these appliances will use up a fair amount of water. If you use them at times when you'll also be showering or taking a bath, then you may need extra storage.

If you aren't sure what size of hot water tank to install in your system, ask your plumber for advice. They can assess your water consumption information and ask about specific needs to help you find the right solution for your household.
