Plumbing Pipes: What Are Some Different Types of Pipes?
If you are new to plumbing repairs, the first thing you should know about is pipes. There are many different pipes that will be used, from PVC pipe to copper pipe. It helps to learn the basics of plumbing pipes and fittings before you get involved in more complex repairs. Here are some different types of pipes used by plumbers.
PVC Pipe
One of the most common types of plumbing pipes you will encounter is PVC pipe, also called polyvinyl chloride. This is a type of plastic pipe that is easy to use, affordable, and very flexible. It is safe for transporting water throughout a home or commercial property, and is also used for vents. You can find PVC pipe at any hardware store and get it cut right at the store. When you are looking for a lightweight pipe for waste or drain work and need something easy to install, PVC is probably your best bet.
Copper Pipe
While slightly heavier than plastic pipe and not as easy to use, copper pipe is very sturdy and long-lasting. This type of pipe isn't used in the same applications as PVC, however. It is used most often for HVAC systems, as well as distributing hot and cold water in various applications. It can be used indoors or outdoors, as it works well under ground. Though if you are using it underground, be careful about the type of soil, since it can counteract with certain soils. Copper is more expensive, but one of the longest-lasting pipes available. For the fittings, soldering is usually required.
PEX Pipe
Another type of plastic pipe you might use is called PEX pipe, or cross-linked polyethylene. This is used in residential plumbing systems and often replaces PVC pipe. While it seems like it would be more affordable since it is made of plastic, this pipe is actually a lot more expensive than copper. It is very flexible, simple to install and easier to cut than PVC and other types of plastic pipes. For the plumbing fittings, use compression fittings.
Galvanized Pipe
While not often used in residential homes, galvanized pipe is sometimes still used in industrial and commercial buildings. It is a type of metal pipe that is made from iron or steel. IT is safe to transport water, so often used for drain lines in buildings. It isn't as easy to work with as copper and plastic pipe, which is why it isn't used as often. Though there are definite benefits to using it in commercial buildings that have a greater need for a strong type of pipe.
